Rain and Drought Dashboard
10-Year Climate Analysis for Selected Counties
Project Overview
Welcome to the Rain and Drought Analysis Project. This project collects, aligns, and visualizes 10 years of daily precipitation records for a state (default South Dakota) and weekly U.S. Drought Monitor data for specified counties (default Oglala Lakota County and Todd County). These default counties correspond to part of the Pine Ridge and Rosebud reservations and are labeled as such in plots.
[!NOTE] All visualizations are fully interactive. You can zoom, pan, hover to inspect raw coordinates, and click on years in the legend to toggle specific curves.
Data Sources & Repositories
We track precipitation and drought severity metrics through several authoritative repositories. Default data sources shown below are replaced with data for other counties or states by modifying config.csv. (See Rain and Drought Records Collection for more details).
1. Weekly & Monthly Drought Tracking
- County Conditions dashboards (Drought.gov):
- Oglala Lakota County Conditions
- Todd County Conditions These dashboards aggregate weekly U.S. Drought Monitor updates (released every Thursday) alongside the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), which measures objective departures from normal rainfall.
- U.S. Drought Monitor (South Dakota): Tracks percentage area classifications (from D0 “Abnormally Dry” to D4 “Exceptional Drought”) on a weekly basis across the state. Tabular data is filtered explicitly down to individual counties like Oglala Lakota (FIPS
46102) and Todd (FIPS46121).
2. Daily & Historical Precipitation Records
- South Dakota Mesonet Archives: Operated by South Dakota State University, the Mesonet offers daily cumulative curves of precipitation plotted against 30-year climate normals.
- South Dakota Drought Dashboard: Hosted via the U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit, offering map-based regional tracking combining short-term 1–7 day precipitation forecasts with historical monthly monitoring.
- NCEI County-Level Climate Data: Updates monthly precipitation, rainfall, and temperature data specifically mapped to counties like Oglala Lakota and Todd.
Local Data Pipeline & Analysis
The project is split into two primary components:
- Data Collection: A Python-based Quarto pipeline that programmatically retrieves 10 years of weekly county drought data and daily South Dakota mean precipitation (via ACIS GridData and USDM API endpoints).
- Saved weekly drought records:
data/oglala_lakota_drought_weekly.csvanddata/todd_drought_weekly.csv. - Saved daily precipitation records:
data/south_dakota_precipitation_daily.csv.
- Saved weekly drought records:
- Interactive Visualizations: A Plotly-based dashboard that builds timeline charts and cumulative trajectories over time and by year to compare county-specific drought progressions with precipitation.
Source Code
All source code is available in the GitHub repository byandell/rainDrought. Code is written in Quarto (.qmd) documents with python code chunks (.py) with the Conda environment earth-analytics-python-env. Python code is in folder rainDrought/ while Quarto code is in the main folder. The entire analysis can be completed using the rainDrought/run_analysis.py script by running the command
python run_analysis.pyWebsite deployment uses GitHub Actions via the docs/ folder.
